Abstract
Abstract: Chemical analyses for As and Sb in Santorini sediments, and As in waters, from the vicinity of active hydrothermal vents indicated hydrothermal enrichments of these elements in the Santorini sediments relative to normal marine sediments and of As in the waters relative to normal seawater. Bi in the sediments falls within the range of its concentrations in normal clastic sediments. As/Fe ratios in the sediments increase with increasing distance from the hydrothermal vents which, coupled with a strong association between As and Fe demonstrated by partition analysis, suggests that hydrothermal As is scavenged into the sediments by freshly precipitating Fe-oxides and that the conditions for this become increasingly favourable away from the vents.
